NLEA Joins Statewide Economic Development Coalition

MBN: Payton HeinsBoyne City, MI – October 15, 2025 — The Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) and Economic Development Leaders for Michigan (EDLM) announce the appointment of Payton Heins, President and CEO of the NLEA to EDLM, strengthening Northern Michigan’s role in shaping Michigan’s economic development efforts.

EDLM is a coalition of leading regional economic development organizations across Michigan, united by a mission to accelerate the state’s economy through strategic collaboration, resource alignment, and policy advocacy. Established in 2020, EDLM members are at the forefront of business retention, expansion, and attraction efforts — driving job creation and economic resilience in rural and urban communities across Michigan.

“We’re excited to welcome Payton Heins and the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance to the Economic Development Leaders for Michigan. Their addition is another strong step toward a more united Team Michigan,” said Randy Thelen, EDLM Chair and CEO of The Right Place in Grand Rapids. “Payton brings an important perspective from Northern Lower Michigan, where unique regional challenges demand creative, practical solutions around housing, talent, and site readiness. Her leadership and policy expertise — especially her experience advancing rural priorities at both the state and federal levels — will be a strong asset to our coalition as we work together to advance economic development across the state.”

EDLM represents Michigan’s most active and productive economic regions, covering more than 79% of the state’s population and 84% of its Gross Domestic Product. With over 220 years of combined leadership experience, the coalition calls for targeted investments and policy reforms to support business attraction and retention, community development, talent, and innovation.

“This appointment helps ensure that the distinct needs and opportunities of businesses and communities across Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet counties are not just acknowledged—but prioritized—in statewide economic development strategies,” said Payton Heins, President and CEO of the NLEA. “Through EDLM, the NLEA will continue to champion the creation of innovative tools, strategic partnerships, and forward-thinking policies that position Northern Michigan for a stronger economic future.”
