LANSING, Mich. — Seams Sewing and Mercantile is stitching a vibrant new chapter with the grand re-opening of its downtown Lansing location. Step inside Seams to discover a movement reshaping the future of the textile industry—one that celebrates creativity and inclusion. The reimagined sewing sanctuary welcomes makers of all identities, backgrounds and skill levels to a space where creative self-expression thrives.
Jessy Gregg, founder of Seams, began sewing at age nine and blossomed during her teenage years, designing costumes for local theater productions. Yet, Gregg’s vision for Seams extends beyond fabric and thread to challenge the conventional image of American fabric stores, which often cater to the more experienced sewist. Seams embraces the full spectrum of modern makers, from expert quilters to fashion-forward DIYers and eco-conscious beginners looking to mend their favorite jeans.
“Seams is a celebratory movement for self-expression,” said Gregg. “It’s a community where people can show up as themselves and learn or strengthen their skills in a judgment-free environment. We invite the curious, the seasoned and everyone in between to experience the joy of turning fabric and thread into a one-of-a-kind creation.”
More than a storefront, Seams is becoming a vital thread in the fabric of Lansing’s creative culture. By centering on inclusivity and self-expression, the store actively supports diverse identities and advocates for a broader understanding of what it means to be a “maker.” The new-breed fabric store offers sewing materials, sustainable fabrics, gifts, accessories and classes fit for every creative journey.
“There’s a misconception that DIY means doing it alone,” said Gregg. “We believe learning should be collaborative and joyful. We want people to know they don’t have to be experts before walking through our doors.”
Seams’ grand re-opening celebration will take place Saturday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 204 E. César E. Chávez Ave. in downtown Lansing. The event will include exclusive deals and giveaways, local coffee and pastries, and speeches by Gregg and local leaders. In the inclusive spirit that defines Seams, a community ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held where all attendees are welcome to help cut the ribbon and be part of a shared celebration of Seams’ new chapter.
