TechTown Detroit | Alumni Are Opening Stores & Landing on TV!

We’re gearing up for an interactive discussion in partnership with Build Institute, that shines a light on several popular Detroit businesses who have weathered the COVID-19 pandemic, economic downturns and more. To meet and hear from the owners behind these businesses, make sure to attend our next Open City panel, Still Standing: Detroit Businesses that Beat the Odds, on Thursday, July 24! More details can be found below.

We also have an important update on our business hours! TechTown’s operating hours are now Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These adjusted hours help us better serve the community we so deeply care about! Scroll down for more information on this change.

Now, here are some fun recommendations from our team members:

📚 Erica Overstreet, TechTown’s membership manager, recommends the book With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic by Hollywood historian A. Ashley Hoff. Overstreet says: “I am obsessed with the movie Mommie Dearest, which is an incredibly campy, over-the-top film about the Old Hollywood movie star Joan Crawford and her tumultuous relationship with her daughter, Christina Crawford. The movie is famous for some dramatic scenes and is extremely quotable. The book is all about the making of the film, how everything went wrong and how it oddly became an immediate cult hit.”

We are so glad to have you with us!

We congratulate Alerje, a Detroit-based food allergy management company and TechTown coworking member, for receiving a $200,000 Technology Enhancement for Commercial Partnerships grant from the National Science Foundation! This grant helps small businesses successfully commercialize their technologies through strategic corporate and investor partnerships.

In a LinkedIn post from the company, Alerje stated the grant “comes at a time where focus and aligned partnerships have led to new opportunities not just for our team, but for the broader vision of what allergy care can become.”

Strength comes in numbers

We’re still feeling the strength of our community following last month’s Immigrant Heritage Month: Legacy Across Borders event! It was a special evening dedicated to celebrating the vibrant stories, cultures and entrepreneurial journeys of immigrant and first-generation business owners. As Mario Tapia, program coordinator for our Tech-based Programs, says in this reel recapping the event: “Bringing [the community] together showcases the power that immigrants bring to the city of Detroit, not just through themselves but also through their business.”
