Lansing Art Gallery is pleased to present Parts of Trees, an exhibition of acrylic paintings by East Lansing artist, Martha Brownscombe. An established fiber artist, Martha’s exhibition will focus on the use of tree materials such as bark, pods, sticks, and leaves in a fiber art form.
Martha says, “I am always looking at materials, and thinking how it could be made into a woven structure. For many years now, I have been experimenting with incorporating natural materials in my fiber pieces. I enjoy being in nature and collecting materials that most would not notice. I have been working with birch bark to create Japanese Pojage cloths. This is very old traditional fabric technique in Japan. I am using bark from Birch trees, stitching on the bark to make long strips and then combing them into panels.”
